The Way We Were, by Barbra Streisand
Barbra Streisand was at the height of her popularity when she paired with Robert Redford in The Way We Were. Movie: yawn. Song: memorable. Lyrics were by the team of Alan and Marilyn Bergman with music by Marvin Hamlisch.
Looking back at the winners of the “Best Original Song” category in the Academy Awards, I’m struck more by those songs that weren’t selected than by those that were. Here’s just some of the classics that weren’t selected:
- “Footloose”
- “Nine to Five”
- “Gonna Fly Now” (Rocky)
- “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life” (The Happy Ending)
- “Unchained Melody” (Unchained)
- “A Kiss to Build a Dream On” (The Strip)
- “Blues in the Night”
- “They Can’t Take That Away from Me” (Shall We Dance)
The Way We Were stayed at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for three weeks. The American Film Institute considers it number eight in its Top 100 Songs from Film.
