Dance with My Father, by Luther Vandross
I have to admit, I didn’t appreciate Luther Vandross enough while he was alive. What a smooth, pure, R&B voice he had. “Dance with My Father” was the title track of his final album, and he had a serious stroke a month before its release. He was never the same, and passed away in 2005 at the age of 54.
The song is a poignant memory of Luther’s early childhood, his father having died when the boy was only seven. Written with Richard Marx, it tugs at the heartstrings of all of us who have fond memories of our father.
“Dance with My Father” earned Luther the Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, and he shared Song of the Year with Marx. The video is especially moving, too:
