Pixar has never made a bad movie. (Brave and Ratatouille are forgettable, but not bad.) And when the studio is on top of its game, no studio has ever done animated films better. Not even Walt, rest in peace. And with Finding Nemo, Pixar was at the top of its game.

While the character voices in animated films are important, they seldom make or break them. But with the inspired selection of Ellen DeGeneres as Dory, a blue tang with short term memory problems, this movie found its focus. Found its voice. The screenplay by Andrew Stanton, Bob Peterson, and David Reynolds was inspired, the direction (probably the most unappreciated people in Hollywood are the directors of animated movies) by Andrew Stanton was terrific. The film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Film, for heaven’s sake. But it’s still the voice work by Ellen that lingers in my mind.
We have a couple of years before the inevitable sequel comes to the big screen. They’re saying late 2015. But the good news is that Andrew Stanton will direct again, Albert Brooks will be back – and Ellen has signed for the new movie. I think she’ll have a pretty big part – one of the names being considered is Finding Dory.
