Hamilton: An American Musical
Have you ever thought, “I’m going to sit down at the old piano and compose a musical. I’ll make it about a historical figure from 200 years ago that people are only vaguely familiar with. I’ll have all the dialogue sung. Maybe some rap. It’s a cinch to receive the most Tony nominations ever and win 11, including Best Musical. I bet it’ll win the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. And what the heck, why not a Pulitzer Prize for Drama.”
Somehow, that’s what Lin-Manuel Miranda accomplished with Hamilton. As Miranda read Ron Chernow’s biography Alexander Hamilton, he thought, This could be a musical. He wrote songs over a period of two years, and the finished play premiered to huge success off-Broadway. It was quickly moved to Broadway, where it’s been a huge hit ever since.
The national touring company has just gone out on the road, and a second is coming in 2018. So if you can’t make it to New York, don’t worry. Hamilton is coming to you.
