Come Away with Me, by Norah Jones
When I first heard Norah Jones, I assumed she was maybe in her 40’s, judging solely by that dusky voice. Then, of course, I saw a picture and was completely surprised. How could a voice so redolent of whiskey and cigarettes come from someone so young and innocent-looking?
Well, it did and it still does. When her first album Come Away With Me was released in 2002, it was an instant hit with both critics and the public – and how often does that happen? It had a minimalist jazzy sound, and playing it you could picture yourself in a small club listening to Norah and the combo a few feet away.
Only one song from the album, “Don’t Know Why,” became a hit, but the album was a huge seller. The Grammy Awards certainly took notice: Jones won Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year. In addition, songwriter Jesse Harris won Song of the Year for “Don’t Know Why.”
