MTV Unplugged by Tony Bennett
“I’ve always been unplugged,” Tony Bennett said. Even so, of all the artists who’ve appeared in this MTV showcase, few have made an impact as significant as Anthony Benedetto.
He sang with his regular trio, who in their own right are some of the smoothest performers you’ll ever hear. And he brought out the Great American Songbook, exposing it to a young audience. And exposing that audience to him, as well. (Whew, that’s as much exposure as this website is allowed to have.) Among the classics he performed:
- “It Had to Be You”
- “The Girl I Love”
- “Fly Me to the Moon”
- “Rags to Riches”
- “The Good Life”
- “Steppin’ Out With My Baby”
- “Moonglow” (with K.D. Lang)
- “They Can’t Take That Away from Me” (with Elvis Costello)
- “All of Me”
- “Body and Soul”
- “Autumn Leaves”
and of course, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”
The album earned Bennett the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance and the prestigious Album of the Year.
