It’s not true that Bobby Flay invented the Food Network. It just seems that way. Few American chefs – maybe none – have combined the arts of cooking and communication the way Bobby Flay has.

The restaurants came first. He started with Mesa Grill in New York, then Bolo, then Bar Americain. Later came Gato, Bobby Flay Steak, and Bobby’s Burger Palace. But most of us know him from his television shows, of which there have been many – he debuted on the Food Network back in 1994. Since then we’ve seen Iron Chef America, Bobby Flay’s Barbecue Addiction, Throwdown with Bobby Flay, Beat Bobby Flay, and many more. Along with Giada De Laurentis, he is the Food Network’s most bankable star.

One reason we like Bobby so much is that he has that “ordinary guy” aura despite his celebrity status. We also like the kind of food he prepares. It’s steak and barbecue, real American food. He’s parlayed it not only into restaurant success, but into a dozen cookbooks, radio shows, and numerous awards including three Emmys and induction into the Culinary Hall of Fame.

No, I never heard of it either.
