Pebble Beach Golf Course
Pebble Beach is the most spectacular golf course in the United States. It doesn’t have the genteel beauty and pedigree of Augusta National, or the star power you’ll find playing Congressional in Bethesda, Maryland. All it has is a little something called the Pacific Ocean, wild and powerful and majestic.
You get to Pebble Beach by taking the 17-Mile Drive from Pacific Grove, a scenic journey that’s worth doing all by itself. Pebble Beach itself lies along Carmel Bay on the south side of the Monterey Peninsula. It was created nearly 100 years ago, and has hosted five U.S. Open Championships, most recently in 2010.
For many years it received fame as the site of the “Clam Bake” – the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am Tournament. Before the PGA, Bing Crosby put up a substantial prize to get his Hollywood buddies to play golf with professionals, and then to enjoy a pretty elaborate party after. Today, Pebble Beach continues to host the tournament that evolved from the Crosby, now called the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. It’s still a great tournament, but it’ll never be the same as when Der Bingle hosted.
