South Pacific, Musical
When James Michener wrote his Pulitzer Prize-winning book Tales of the South Pacific, I can’t imagine he thought it would be turned into a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that would win its own Pulitzer for Drama just three years later. But it was and it did.
A good part of the musical’s story (written by Hammerstein and Joshua Logan) deals with racial prejudice, a not particularly popular topic at the time. But it did so with warmth and insight, no doubt one of the primary reasons the show was so well received.
The main reason, though, was the music. Here are some of the great songs from South Pacific:
- “A Cockeyed Optimist”
- “Bloody Mary”
- “There Is Nothing Like a Dame”
- “Bali Ha’i”
- “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair”
- “I’m in Love with a Wonderful Guy”
- “Some Enchanted Evening”
- “This Nearly Was Mine”
No wonder this has become one of the standard bearers of the musical theater for the last 60+ years. Go listen to the soundtrack on Spotify. I would recommend renting the movie from Netflix, but it’s still a major disappointment, all these years later.
