Sunset Boulevard
The great actors always make it look so effortless. Maybe that’s why William Holden has never quite received the level of respect his talent is due. As second-rate screenwriter Joe Gillis in Sunset Boulevard, he carries one of the greatest films of all time with his characteristic world-weariness and grace.
Sunset Boulevard is ostensibly about the madness of a silent film star (Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond) who believes she’s about to make a comeback. But it’s also a great noir classic, an examination of gray motives in a black and white world.
Sunset Boulevard was directed and co-written by the great Billy Wilder. The movie made the top 20 of the AFI’s 100 Years…100 Movies both times it was formulated, and also has two quotes in the top 25 of AFI’s 100 Years…100 Movie quotes:
“All right, Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up.” (#7) and “I am big. It’s the pictures that got small.” (#25)
